What Makes a Really Great Date?

We Asked Oklahomans: What Makes a Really Great Date?

We have a theory about date night: people don't necessarily need more things to do. They need more reasons to actually do them. So we started asking people a simple question: “What makes a really great date?”

The answers were different, but the same themes kept coming up.

It Isn't About How Much You Spend

Some of the best date stories don't involve expensive restaurants or elaborate plans. They involve a favorite little place, a walk, a shared dessert or an unexpected adventure. A $20 date can become a favorite memory. A $200 date can be forgettable. The price tag isn't the point.

Someone Else Doing the Planning Is Pretty Nice

Let's talk about this one. Sometimes the most romantic thing you can say is, “I've got tonight. Just be ready at 6.” No researching. No comparing restaurants. No checking hours. No figuring out parking. No wondering what comes next.

Just show up.

You Need Time to Actually Talk

A great date gives you space to talk—not just logistics. What are you dreaming about? What are you excited about? What made you laugh this week? What would you love to do together next year?

You don't need a list of 50 deep questions. You just need enough time to remember that you're partners, not project managers.

Trying Something New Makes a Date More Memorable

There is something about saying, “We've never done this before,” that makes a night stick in your memory. Try the new restaurant, take the class, visit the neighborhood you've never explored, or go see the show you've never heard of. Try new experiences create new stories.

Put the Phones Away

This one came up again and again. Take the picture now but post it later. For at least part of the date, put the phones away and be where you are. The person sitting across from you is more interesting than your notifications.

And Maybe the Biggest One: Be Intentional

A date doesn't magically become special because it happens on Friday night. It becomes special because you decided that the two of you were worth setting aside time for. That's really what we believe at Reserved For Two.

We don't think couples need another obligation on their calendar. We think they need a reason to protect a little space on it. Because a great date isn't really about where you go. It's about being intentional about spending time together.

So… When Was Your Last Date?

Not dinner while talking about the kids, not running errands together, and not sitting on the couch watching another show. But a real date where you were paying attention to your favorite person across from you. If you can't remember, maybe that's your sign. So I challenge you to pick a night, put it on the calendar, and go be a couple again.
